Galvanism

/ˈɡælvənɪzəm/ noun

Definition

The production of electric current by chemical action, or the science of electricity produced by chemical reactions.

Etymology

Named directly after Luigi Galvani, who discovered that electricity could be generated through chemical means in the 1780s. His name became synonymous with this branch of electrochemistry.

Kelly Says

Galvani's frog leg experiments were the accidental birth of batteries—when he hung frog legs on a brass hook attached to an iron rod, they twitched without any battery being involved, proving chemical reactions make electricity!
