Genome

/ˈdʒinoʊm/ noun

Definition

The complete set of DNA, including all genes and non-coding sequences, found in an organism's cells. It contains all the genetic information needed to build and maintain that organism.

Etymology

Coined in 1920 by German botanist Hans Winkler, combining 'gene' and the suffix '-ome' (meaning complete set). The term gained prominence during the Human Genome Project in the 1990s.

Kelly Says

Your genome is like a massive instruction manual written in a four-letter alphabet (A, T, G, C) that's 3 billion letters long! If you printed it out, the text would stack higher than the Washington Monument.
