Definition
Relating to geography or the physical features, climate, and human aspects of the Earth's surface. Pertaining to the study of places and spatial relationships.
Etymology
From Greek 'geographikos', composed of 'geo-' (earth) and 'graphikos' (relating to writing/drawing). The term was coined by the ancient Greek scholar Eratosthenes, who literally meant 'earth-writing' or mapping the world.
Kelly Says
Geography was originally 'earth-writing' - ancient geographers were literally writing the Earth's story through maps and descriptions! Eratosthenes, who invented the term, also calculated Earth's circumference with remarkable accuracy using just shadows and geometry.
