Georgic

/dʒɔːˈdʒɪk/ adjective

Definition

Relating to agriculture, farming, or rural and pastoral life; descriptive of poems or literature about farming and rural themes.

Etymology

From Latin georgicus, from Greek georgikos (from georgos, 'farmer'). The term comes directly from Virgil's famous poem 'Georgics' (29 BCE), which was about agriculture and rural life in ancient Rome.

Kelly Says

Virgil wrote the 'Georgics' about farming as a noble, almost sacred activity—and writers ever since have used 'georgic' to describe poetry or stories celebrating rural and agricultural life. It's one of the oldest literary genres!
