Definition
The Indian wild ass, a rare equine species native to the Thar Desert with a distinctive stocky build and thick neck.
Etymology
From Hindi/Urdu 'ghorkhar' or 'ghor khar' (meaning 'wild ass'). British naturalists preserved the local name for this species. The animal is now critically endangered.
Kelly Says
The ghorkhar is one of Earth's rarest animals—fewer than 500 exist—and its Indian name has become the scientific common name, showing how indigenous knowledge helps scientists understand wildlife!
