An extinct genus of enormous ape that lived in Asia millions of years ago and was much larger than modern gorillas.
From Greek 'gigas' (giant) + 'pithēkos' (ape). The scientific name was coined in 1935 by paleontologist Ralph von Koenigswald to describe fossil remains of this previously unknown primate, combining Greek roots to literally mean 'giant ape.'
Gigantopithecus stood 10 feet tall and weighed nearly 600 pounds—basically a King Kong that actually existed! It disappeared about 300,000 years ago, possibly outcompeted by smaller, smarter hominins, showing that being gigantic isn't always an evolutionary advantage.
