Definition
A unit of electrical power equal to one billion watts, commonly used to measure large power plants and electricity generation.
Etymology
From 'giga-' (one billion) + 'watt' (unit of power, named after James Watt). This unit emerged as modern power generation grew and required terminology for massive energy output.
Kelly Says
A typical large nuclear power plant produces about 1 gigawatt—enough electricity for roughly 750,000 homes—so when you hear 'gigawatt' in news about renewable energy, it's literally describing city-scale power production!
