Ginseng

/ˈdʒɪnsɛŋ/ noun

Definition

A plant root highly valued in traditional medicine, particularly in East Asian cultures, believed to have adaptogenic and energy-boosting properties.

Etymology

From Chinese 'rénshēn' (人蔘) literally meaning 'man root' because the forked root resembles a human figure. The word entered English in the 17th century through trade contacts with China.

Kelly Says

Wild ginseng can take decades to mature and is so valuable that 'ginseng poaching' is a real problem in Appalachian forests, with roots selling for thousands of dollars per pound. The plant's scientific name Panax comes from Greek 'panakeia' meaning 'cure-all', reflecting its reputation as a universal medicine.
