Glitzy

/ˈɡlɪtsi/ adjective

Definition

Flashy and showy in an attention-grabbing way; glamorous but often superficial or in poor taste.

Etymology

From Yiddish glitz (glitter, show-off) + -y (adjective suffix), entering English around the 1960s. Yiddish immigrants to America brought this word which blended glitter with a sense of ostentatious display.

Kelly Says

Glitzy perfectly captures the post-war American aesthetic—think Las Vegas casinos and Hollywood excess. Unlike 'glittery' which can be beautiful or neutral, 'glitzy' carries judgment, implying sparkle without substance, which reveals how the same visual effect can feel classy or trashy depending on context.
