Glycolipid

/ˌɡlaɪkoʊˈlɪpɪd/ noun

Definition

A molecule combining a lipid (fat) with a carbohydrate (sugar) that is found on cell membranes and plays a role in cell recognition and immune response.

Etymology

From 'glyco-' (relating to sugar) + 'lipid' (fat molecule). These hybrid molecules were named when chemists realized that cell membranes contain both fat and sugar components chemically bonded together.

Kelly Says

Glycolipids are like name tags on your cells—your immune system reads the sugar part to recognize 'self' cells versus invaders, which is also why blood type matters (Type O, A, B have different glycolipid patterns)!
