Etymology
From Greek gnathos (jaw) combined with the suffix -onic, originally referring to Gnathonicus, a famous flatterer in ancient Greek comedy who inspired the term for flattery itself.

The ancient Greeks were so annoyed by one particular flatterer named Gnathonicus that they literally named an entire character type after him in their comedies—his name became the word for all flatterers forever!
