Definition
The rod or shadow-casting piece in a sundial that shows the time by its shadow; any similar object used to indicate direction or position.
Etymology
From Greek 'gnōmōn' (examiner, indicator), from 'gignōskein' (to know). The term literally means 'one who knows or examines,' referring to how the shadow 'tells' time.
Kelly Says
A 'gnomon' is basically an ancient human invention for reading shadows—it turns an invisible force (the sun's movement) into readable information, making it one of humanity's first data visualization tools.
