Gobi

/ˈɡoʊbi/ noun

Definition

A vast desert region in northern China and southern Mongolia, known for its extreme temperatures and dinosaur fossils.

Etymology

From Mongolian gobi meaning 'waterless place' or 'desert.' The word entered Western languages through early explorers and traders along the Silk Road in the 19th century.

Kelly Says

The Gobi Desert is a paleontologist's paradise - its shifting sands regularly reveal dinosaur eggs and fossils that are millions of years old, including the famous 'fighting dinosaurs' fossil showing a Velociraptor and Protoceratops locked in eternal combat. Despite being called a desert, much of the Gobi is actually cold steppe that can drop to -40°F in winter.
