Definition
A tall palm tree of Southeast Asia (Arenga pinnata) that produces edible sap, sugar, and fiber.
Etymology
From Malay gömöti or gomuti, the native name for this palm tree; borrowed into English through colonial trade contacts with Southeast Asia.
Kelly Says
The gomuti palm is a triple-threat plant—its sap ferments into a strong drink, boils down into palm sugar, and its fibers make rope so durable sailors preferred it to other materials!
