Definition
In a silly, foolish, or clumsy manner; in the way that a goofy person would act.
Etymology
From 'goofy' (silly, foolish) plus the adverb suffix '-ly' (which converts adjectives to adverbs describing how something is done). The '-ly' suffix comes from Old English '-lice,' related to 'like' or 'manner.'
Kelly Says
The '-ly' suffix is English's most productive adverb maker—you can stick it on almost any adjective to turn it into an adverb ('happy' → 'happily,' 'quick' → 'quickly'), and this predictability is why it's been our go-to tool for centuries!
