Definition
Acting in a silly, playful, or careless way; joking around or not being serious.
Etymology
From 'goof,' which emerged in early 20th-century American slang, possibly from the surname Goff or from a Yiddish word. Became widespread through American pop culture.
Kelly Says
Goof is wonderfully informal—'goofy,' 'goofing around,' 'acting the goof'—and it shows how modern slang from the 1900s become permanent parts of English, especially through comedy and entertainment.
