Etymology
From Swedish 'Göteborg', literally meaning 'Göta fortress' or 'fortress of the Geats'. Named after the Göta älv river and the Germanic tribe called Geats, with 'borg' meaning fortress. The Anglicized form reflects historical English attempts to pronounce Swedish place names.
