Gratuitous

/grəˈtuɪtəs/ adjective

Definition

Done without good reason or justification; unnecessary and often inappropriate or excessive. It can also mean given freely without payment, but more commonly describes something uncalled for.

Etymology

From Latin 'gratuitus' meaning 'given freely,' derived from 'gratus' (pleasing, thankful). While originally positive (describing gifts), the meaning shifted to emphasize the 'unnecessary' aspect, often with negative connotations.

Kelly Says

Gratuitous contains 'gratitude' but ironically describes things nobody asked for or wanted! Think of gratuitous violence in movies - it's thrown in 'for free' but adds nothing to the story, like an unwelcome gift that makes everyone uncomfortable.
