Grays

/ɡreɪz/ noun

Definition

Plural of gray; various shades between black and white, or things that are gray in color. Can also refer to gray areas or ambiguous situations.

Etymology

From Old English græg, related to Old High German grāo. The color term comes from Proto-Germanic *grēwaz, possibly related to the root meaning 'to grow' (as in gray hair from aging).

Kelly Says

The human eye can distinguish between approximately 500 different shades of gray, making it the color we can perceive with the greatest nuance. In photography and digital imaging, the gray scale is fundamental - every colored image can be converted to grays while retaining most of its essential visual information.
