Definition
Gruesome, horrifying, or disturbing to look at or think about; describing something ghastly and macabre.
Etymology
From Old English 'grislic' (terrifying), likely related to 'grin' (a snarl or grimace). The word originally meant something that would make you grimace in fear.
Kelly Says
Don't confuse 'grisly' with 'grizzly' (the bear)—they're completely different words that got tangled together! 'Grisly' comes from the face you'd make seeing something horrible, while 'grizzly' means gray or grayish, like the bear's coat. Autocorrect loves to mix these up.
