Definition
Plural of grotesque; multiple things that are extremely strange, ugly, or distorted in appearance.
Etymology
Plural of grotesque, from Italian 'grottesco' (literally 'of or from a grotto'). Renaissance artists applied this term to the bizarre frescoes and decorations found in excavated Roman underground chambers.
Kelly Says
Grotesques literally started as art found in caves, but now the word describes anything so weirdly ugly it almost seems impossible—it jumped from an art style to describing reality!
