Guemul

/ɡweɪˈmuːl/ noun

Definition

A small, rare South American deer native to the mountains of Chile and Argentina, also called the Huemul.

Etymology

From Mapuche (indigenous Chilean language) huemul. The spelling variant guemul reflects different Romanizations of the Mapuche word by early Spanish and English observers.

Kelly Says

The Huemul is Chile's national animal and was nearly hunted to extinction—today fewer than 2,000 remain, making it one of South America's most endangered cervids and a symbol of conservation challenges.
