Definition
Plural of guillotine; multiple execution devices consisting of a heavy blade that falls to behead a person, or the act of executing with these devices.
Etymology
From guillotine (machine named after advocate Dr. Joseph Guillotin, 1738-1814) pluralized with -s. The device became widespread during the French Revolution and became iconic in history.
Kelly Says
Paris had so many guillotines during the Terror that they were positioned across different neighborhoods to speed up executions—it's one of history's darkest examples of industrial efficiency applied to killing.
