Definition
The process of making sounds in the throat or converting sounds to be produced from the back of the throat.
Etymology
From guttural (from Latin guttur meaning 'throat') plus the -ize suffix meaning 'to make or cause to be,' with the -ing form indicating the ongoing action.
Kelly Says
Singers and voice coaches use gutturalizing techniques to access deeper, raspier vocal tones—it's how some metal singers get that intense growling sound, and it shows how our throat is like a musical instrument with multiple registers.
