Haemorrhage

/ˈhɛmərɪdʒ/ noun, verb

Definition

Serious bleeding from a blood vessel inside the body, or to lose blood heavily.

Etymology

From Greek 'haima' (blood) and 'rhegnynai' (to break, burst). The literal meaning is 'blood bursting forth.' The spelling with 'ae' is British English; American English uses 'hemorrhage' with just 'e'.

Kelly Says

Greek medical terminology built modern medicine—'haem/hem' (blood), 'cardio' (heart), 'phlebotomy' (vein cutting) all come from Greek, because doctors training in Alexandria 2,000 years ago spoke Greek!
