Definition
A person whose job was to carry out executions by hanging, or a word-guessing game where players try to figure out a hidden word before drawing a complete hangman figure.
Etymology
From Old English 'hon' meaning to hang and 'man' meaning man. The compound has been used since medieval times. The game version emerged in the 19th century as a dark but clever word puzzle game.
Kelly Says
The word game 'Hangman' became wildly popular in the Victorian era when people were fascinated by word puzzles—it's morbid humor disguised as entertainment, reflecting how different generations deal with dark topics!

Gender History
Historical executions gendered: hangman was male role, but word carries violence legacy. 'Hangman' game trivializes execution.
Inclusive Usage
For the word game, use 'word guessing game' or 'letter game.' For executioner role, use 'executioner' (gender-neutral).
Inclusive Alternatives
["word guessing game","letter game","executioner"]
Empowerment Note
Women were executed at lower rates historically, but word choices matter; trivializing execution through games erases suffering.
