Definition
A famous Carthaginian general (247-183 BCE) who led forces against Rome during the Punic Wars and is remembered as one of history's greatest military strategists.
Etymology
From Punic/Phoenician origin, the name possibly means 'grace of Baal' (Baal being a Carthaginian deity). The name entered English through Latin and Greek sources that documented the ancient general's exploits.
Kelly Says
Hannibal famously marched war elephants across the Alps to surprise Rome—these weren't the giant elephants we know today but were smaller North African elephants that he used as tanks, and they terrified the Romans who had never seen them before.
