Definition
Given a hand-sel or inaugural gift; inaugurated or consecrated by a gift, as in the custom of giving a gift to begin or bless something new.
Etymology
Past tense of 'hansel' (also spelled 'handsel'), from Old Norse 'handsal,' combining 'hand' (hand) and 'sal' (giving). A hansel was a traditional inaugural gift given at New Year or when beginning something new, especially in Scottish and Northern English traditions.
Kelly Says
In medieval times, you wouldn't just buy something new—you'd give it a 'hansel' gift to bless it! This tradition survives in the phrase 'handsel Monday,' when Scottish people still give small gifts on the first Monday of the new year!
