Definition
Relating to or resembling a spear or javelin; having the characteristics of a lance or missile weapon.
Etymology
From Latin 'hasta' (spear) + suffix '-ile' (relating to, as in 'senile' or 'fragile'). The '-ile' suffix comes from Latin and creates adjectives expressing relationship or characteristic.
Kelly Says
The '-ile' suffix is Latin and relatively uncommon in modern English except in words borrowed directly from Latin—'servile,' 'senile,' 'missile'—which is why 'hastile' sounds archaic and scholarly.
