Definition
A male servant or worker responsible for maintaining the hearth and fire in a household or establishment; a person who tends the fireplace.
Etymology
Compound of 'hearth' (Old English 'hearþ') + 'man' (Old English 'mann'). In pre-industrial households, keeping the fire alive was a specialized job requiring skill and dedication.
Kelly Says
The hearthman was one of the most essential workers in medieval and early modern homes—in a time before central heating, whoever kept that fire going had power over whether people ate hot food, stayed warm, and could see at night.

Ethical Language Guidance
Gender History
Gendered occupational term from hearth-management roles historically assigned to men in some cultures; assumes male presence in domestic/heating labor hierarchy.
Inclusive Usage
Use 'hearth tender' or 'hearth worker' for gender-neutral reference to person managing fire/warmth.
Inclusive Alternatives
["hearth tender","hearth worker","fire keeper"]
Empowerment Note
Women historically managed hearths and thermal comfort in most households; gendered language erases their labor.
