Definition
Directed toward heaven; moving toward or facing heaven; upward toward the divine.
Etymology
From 'heaven' + '-ward' (suffix meaning 'toward' or 'in the direction of'). The '-ward' suffix comes from Old English 'weard' meaning 'guard' or 'direction.' This creates adjectives and adverbs indicating direction or movement.
Kelly Says
'-Ward' suffixes are directional fossils—'toward' now means the same thing, but we still say 'heavenward,' 'northward,' and 'homeward' to evoke a sense of purpose or destiny! It's poetic because it suggests movement with intention, not just motion.
