Hebrews

/ˈhiːbruːz/ noun

Definition

Members of the ancient Semitic people who became the Jewish people, or referring to the biblical book of Hebrews in the New Testament.

Etymology

From Hebrew 'ivri', possibly meaning 'one from beyond' or 'wanderer', referring to Abraham's journey from beyond the Euphrates River. The term passed through Greek 'Hebraios' and Latin 'Hebraeus' into English, maintaining its ethnic and religious significance across millennia.

Kelly Says

The word 'Hebrew' carries layers of identity - it's simultaneously an ancient people, a language that was revived as a living tongue in modern Israel, and a script that flows from right to left. Remarkably, Hebrew is one of the few 'dead' languages successfully brought back to everyday use, now spoken by millions as a native language.
