Definition
Plural of hecatomb; great sacrifices or slaughter, especially of large numbers of animals or people; or massive public celebrations with elaborate sacrifices.
Etymology
From Greek 'hekatomb,' literally 'hecatontos' (hundred) + 'bous' (ox). Originally referred to the sacrifice of 100 oxen in ancient Greek religious ceremonies, then metaphorically to any massive sacrifice or loss.
