A leader or dominant power, especially a country or group that has authority or influence over others.
Etymology
From ancient Greek 'hegemōn' meaning leader, derived from 'hegeisthai' meaning to lead. The word entered English through scholarly use of ancient Greek texts and political theory.

The word 'hegemon' gives us a term for something we notice everywhere but rarely name—the superpower that leads without always needing to command. Ancient city-states had hegemons; today we might call them superpowers, but the word carries the original sense of natural leadership.
