Hein

/haɪn/ interjection

Definition

A French-Canadian expression meaning 'huh?' or 'what?' used to ask for repetition or express confusion.

Etymology

From French hein, which itself is an interjection of uncertain origin, possibly imitative of a questioning sound. It became particularly characteristic of Quebec French and Canadian English in certain regions.

Kelly Says

Hein beautifully demonstrates how languages borrow even the smallest words - this tiny French interjection has become so embedded in Canadian English that many speakers use it without realizing they're code-switching between languages.
