Definition
Something that produces blood or is blood-forming; a substance that stimulates blood cell production.
Etymology
From Greek 'haima' (blood) + 'genesis' (origin, creation). Used in medicine and biochemistry to describe blood-stimulating factors.
Kelly Says
Erythropoietin (EPO) is a natural hematogen hormone your kidneys make—it tells bone marrow 'make more red blood cells!'—which is why athletes used to abuse it illegally for endurance.
