Definition
A body cavity in invertebrate animals where blood or hemolymph bathes the internal organs directly, instead of circulating through blood vessels.
Etymology
From 'hemo-' (blood) and Greek 'koilos' (hollow, cavity); a zoology term describing the open circulatory system found in insects, mollusks, and crustaceans.
Kelly Says
Your heart pumps blood through closed vessels, but an insect's heart pumps blood into an open hemocoel where it directly bathes all the organs—it's a completely different way to distribute oxygen!
