Definition
A plant, typically in the dogbane family, that resembles hemp in appearance but is a different species, sometimes used as a hemp substitute.
Etymology
From 'hemp' + 'bush', combining the name of cannabis plant with the word for a woody shrub, describing plants that look similar to hemp.

Some hempbush varieties produce fibers that colonists and farmers used when actual hemp wasn't available, but they never became as useful because the fiber quality was inferior.
