Etymology
Formed from Latin herba meaning 'grass, herb' plus -cide from caedere meaning 'to kill'. The term was coined in the early 20th century as chemical agriculture developed. Similar formation to pesticide, fungicide, and other agricultural chemicals.

The '-cide' suffix creates a whole family of killing words - herbicide, pesticide, fungicide - but also extends to more dramatic terms like homicide and genocide. This Latin root for 'killing' has become one of English's most productive word-forming elements.
