Hereafter

/hɪrˈæftər/ adverb

Definition

From this time forward; in the future from now. In legal and formal documents, it often means 'in the following part of this document.'

Etymology

Compound of 'here' (in this place/document) and 'after' (following in time). Dating from Old English, it originally referred to the afterlife but evolved to mean simply 'from now on' in temporal contexts.

Kelly Says

This word does double duty - in religious contexts it often refers to the afterlife, but in legal documents it just means 'later in this text,' showing how the same word can have both eternal and mundane meanings!
