Hesperian

/hɛˈspɪəriən/ adjective

Definition

Relating to the Hesperides or the western regions, especially ancient lands in the far west.

Etymology

From Latin Hesperianus, derived from Greek Hesperia (western land), ultimately from Hesperos (evening star, west). The term originally referred to the mythological garden of the Hesperides in ancient Greek lore.

Kelly Says

The ancient Greeks used 'Hesperian' to describe anything far to the west because they literally watched the sun set there—the word is built from their word for 'evening.' When European explorers reached the Americas, some called it the 'Hesperian world' because it was even further west than they'd imagined.
