Definition
A honey-yellow or cinnamon-colored variety of garnet, sometimes used as a gemstone.
Etymology
From Greek hessonites, derived from hessone (inferior), because this variety of garnet is of lower hardness and value than some other garnets. Named for its inferior rating compared to other precious stones.
Kelly Says
Medieval jewelers called hessonite 'inferior garnet,' but modern mineralogists and gem enthusiasts have completely rehabilitated its reputation—what was once considered 'second-rate' is now prized for its warm, honey-like glow!
