Definition
In biology, completing a life cycle on different host species; said of parasites or pathogens that require multiple different hosts to complete their development.
Etymology
From Greek hetero- (different) + oecium (house, dwelling). This botanical/biological term describes organisms that 'house' or live in different host species at different life stages.
Kelly Says
Many rust fungi are heterecious—they need to live on two completely different plants to finish their life cycle, so the fungus that ruins wheat might need a wild grass as an alternate host, which is why farmers rotating crops actually breaks disease cycles.
