Hexogen

/ˈhɛksədʒɛn/ noun

Definition

A highly explosive compound (cyclonite) used in military applications and explosives, also known as RDX.

Etymology

From hex- (six, referring to the six-membered heterocyclic ring in its structure) + -gen (generator or producer). Developed during World War II as chemists synthesized new explosive compounds with more powerful detonation properties.

Kelly Says

Hexogen's real name—RDX—stands for Cyclonite, and it was such a powerful explosive that militaries considered it a game-changer; ironically, understanding its chemistry helped scientists later design safer explosives for legitimate civilian uses like mining and demolition.
