Hoarfrost

/ˈhɔːrfrɒst/ noun

Definition

A white, feathery deposit of ice crystals formed on the ground, grass, and other surfaces by the freezing of water vapor in cold, clear conditions.

Etymology

From Old English 'hār' (grey-haired/venerable) + 'frost.' The ice looks like the white hair of the elderly — nature growing old overnight.

Kelly Says

When the world wakes up looking like it grew white hair overnight! Old English people thought frost looked like grey hair, so they called it HOAR-frost — old-man frost! Every surface gets a tiny white wig! 🧓❄️
