Definition
Hair from a horse's mane or tail, woven into fabric or used as stuffing material in garment construction. In fashion, it provides structure and bounce to garments, particularly in crinolines, bustles, and tailored jackets.
Etymology
Direct compound of 'horse' and 'hair', used in textiles since ancient times. The practice of weaving horsehair into fabric became particularly important in European fashion from the 18th century onward.
Kelly Says
Horsehair canvas is still the gold standard for high-end menswear - Savile Row tailors use it in suit jacket fronts because it molds to the body over time while maintaining structure. Interestingly, the best horsehair comes from cold climates where horses grow thicker, more resilient hair!
