Hun

/hʌn/ noun

Definition

A nomadic people from Central Asia who migrated westward and established a powerful empire in Eastern Europe during the 4th and 5th centuries CE, most famously under Attila.

Etymology

Possibly from a Turkic word meaning 'people' or related to the Chinese 'Xiongnu,' though the exact etymology remains debated. The name entered Latin as 'Hunni' and became synonymous with nomadic warriors.

Kelly Says

The Huns were history's ultimate dominoes—their westward migration triggered a massive chain reaction that pushed Germanic tribes into Roman territory, ultimately contributing to the fall of the Western Roman Empire. Despite their fearsome reputation, archaeological evidence suggests they were skilled craftsmen and traders, not just warriors!
