Hutch

/hʌtʃ/ noun

Definition

A storage chest or cupboard, or a cage or pen for small animals like rabbits.

Etymology

From Old French 'huche' meaning a chest or bin for storing grain, derived from Medieval Latin 'hutica.' The word originally referred to a kneading trough for bread-making, then expanded to mean any storage chest. The connection to rabbit cages came much later - the idea being that both store something valuable (grain or animals) in a secure, enclosed space.

Kelly Says

A hutch was originally where you stored your most precious commodity - grain for bread. The leap from bread storage to rabbit housing shows how one practical storage concept can evolve to protect entirely different valuables, whether wheat or pet bunnies.
