Hydroponic

/ˌhaɪdrəˈpɑnɪk/ adjective

Definition

A method of growing plants in water with nutrients dissolved in it, rather than using soil, often done indoors under controlled conditions.

Etymology

From Greek 'hydro-' (water) and 'ponos' (labor or work). The term was coined in the early 20th century to describe the system of farming that works through water rather than soil.

Kelly Says

Hydroponic farms can produce food year-round in the desert or inside a building, using 95% less water than traditional farming—it's the future of feeding cities without needing farmland.
