Hyperfine structure

Definition

An even smaller splitting of atomic energy levels caused by the interaction between electron magnetic moments and nuclear magnetic moments. This creates extremely precise frequency standards and is responsible for the famous 21-cm line of hydrogen.

Etymology

Coined in the 1920s as physicists discovered structure even 'finer' than fine structure. The prefix 'hyper-' indicates this splitting is typically 1000 times smaller than fine structure splitting, requiring extraordinary precision to observe.
